Bacterial Spectrum and Associated Sociodemographic Factors in Pediatric Blood Stream Infections at Tertiary Care Hospital

Aim: To determine the bacterial spectrum and frequency of sepsis in infants children presenting to a tertiary care hospital, as well its association with sociodemographic factors. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional research was performed at Department Pediatrics, Ziauddin University Hospital Karachi. A total 199 records age group from 29 days 12 years report positive blood culture were included study. Non-probability consecutive sampling technique used. Records reviewed retrospectively demographic data collected such gender, age, diagnosis, type admission (medical or surgical), length stay primary diagnosis associated co-morbidities. SPSS used for statistical analysis. The findings quantitative variables reported terms mean standard deviation qualitative percentages. Inferential statistics analyzed by using Chi-square comparing positivity baseline characteristics p-value ≤0.05 considered significant. Results: study population duration hospital 45.95±37.15 months 7.61±3.61 respectively. Out cases isolates, coagulase negative staphylococci found 95(47.7%), Staphylococci Aureus 57(28.6%), Streptococci species 54(27.1%), E. Coli 24(12.1%), Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 14(7%), Klebsiella Pneumonia 13(6.5%), Enterococcus 11(5.5%). Practical implication: Sepsis pediatric is high mortality increased stay. Early prompt treatment key improve outcome sepsis. Conclusion: There prevalence less than 48 more commonly incomplete vaccination, female decreased maternal educational level lower socioeconomic status especially unusual organisms Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter gram-negative bacilli Keywords: Sepsis, Tertiary care, Pediatric intensive gram organism
